This is not right. Tyler Naquin should NEVER be able to be picked up as a free agent. He will be a top tier player in the playoffs and this is a tragedy for all the other teams. I don't want it to be a strategy for me to have to follow the free agency forum minute by minute in case someone of this caliber is dropped again.

Change this rule.

I thought we had a rule against this: used up players who are released are ineligible for post-season play. Can the rest of the cabal confirm?

It had been discussed but we instead decided to go with July 31st being the roster cutoff. If someone decides to have a dead roster spot for 2+ months, it's the price they pay.

Many teams have dead roster spots like a 4th minor leaguer for much of the season, to carry a good player down the stretch for a benefit in the playoffs is an easy decision.

When this was discussed when we were solidifying the wording in the Rules, my proposal was any player who had as little as a plate appearance or a third of an inning and was dropped at any point of the season was not eligible for the playoffs on any team. But the July 31st date was decided on (to coincide with the trade deadline and the hope that most good players would reach their limit and be dropped after July 31).

As we see, players that could be virtually unlimited for the playoffs are used up prior to the cut off and we shouldn't expect a non-contender to do anything other than drop and replace the player right after they exceed their limit.

We have enough going on with the two drafts where we need to pay attention every 2nd night...and then our profiles twice a week during the season. I don't think we should have to be checking the free agent transactions so we don't miss a nugget that is dropped.

I was lucky on my timing that I could take advantage of this rule, but I'm more than open to a change in the off-season....

For context, I signed Adam Conley back in early April after being released by NCR.

He pitched for 12.1 INN for them in the first two sims and has spent the rest of the season with MAR.

It doesn't make much sense to say that player is not playoff eligible, as he spent the vast majority of the season with me. So, having any player being released and resigned by playoff ineligible would simply restrict use where there was no real purpose.

I don't have a problem with Warren picking up Naquin. Or if any other owner had done the same. If he has his minor leaguers and his dead roster spot, he is more susceptible to problem injuries. If he goes through a brutal stretch where 3-4 of his players go down, he might even have to play short or release someone. It's a risk he takes....

The rule that makes the most sense to me is that an over limits player taken from the waiver wire is ineligible for postseason play. At least a half dozen teams would have grabbed Naquin had they seen him dropped. Probably a full dozen.

I certainly don't want to institute a rule that prevents Ken from using Adam Conley in the playoffs.

For what it's worth, I don't mind the current rule. Deft moves to plunk guys from the waiver wire is just a part of fantasy baseball. If we're trying to approximate real baseball, then having a date by which guys have to be on the roster in order to be playoff-eligible makes sense.

This particular situation may have arisen because a relatively new owner dropped a guy that he probably could have traded for something. But more often these kinds of moves will probably involve guys like the one I grabbed - 20th round pick Jerry Blevins. I grabbed him for his 4 playoff innings, but it comes with a risk. I had to drop my backup SS to make room for him, and if Brandon Crawford gets hurt -- especially in the playoffs(!) -- I'm screwed. Thus the decision to sign him represented one of the many roster-management decisions that allow me to tinker with my team and have fun.

Perhaps more can be done to make sure new owners know that they can (and should) "follow" the forum. I don't religiously check the forum each day, but I do get an e-mail whenever there's a new post. Hence, I did know that Naquin was released, but -- surprise, surprise -- I preferred Jerry Blevins! And that right there, folks, is why I am absolutely no threat to ever win this league... I'm sure the wisdom of the Cabal shall set us on sage path.
